Finding an IT supplier

Building a long-term relationship with a supplier or consultant will help you make the most of your investment in IT.

IT can bring significant benefits to all sizes of business. In order to get the most from your IT, you need to make sure you're confident in your purchase decisions and that your systems are well managed and maintained. If you don't have this expertise in-house, it might make sense to find an IT supplier or consultant who can help and advise you.

Ask business colleagues and friends for recommendations. Draw up a shortlist of possible suppliers who will suit your needs. Don't be afraid to 'interview' them.
  • Does their technical experience match your needs?
  • Do they work with companies like yours? Will they allow you to talk to some of their customers?
  • Do they explain things in ways you can easily understand?
  • What guarantees can they provide?
  • What level of support do they provide, and at what cost?
  • Can they supply all the elements you require, and can they fully install those systems?

It's helpful to set an appropriate IT budget as part of your planning process - your supplier can help you work out an appropriate level for your business. A clear budget allows both parties to be realistic about what can be achieved. Talk to suppliers about what you want from your system, both now and in the future, so that your system can grow as your business grows.

Once you've chosen the right supplier, consider how to manage the relationship. Simply focusing on the lowest possible cost often isn't the best option. It's likely to cause a strain on the relationship and isn't the best plan for the long term. Think of your supplier as one of your company employees and manage the relationship accordingly.

Clear communication is critical. Both parties need to be clear about their expectations from the start. By being explicit and making no assumptions, misunderstandings are less likely to happen.

All of this detail should be contained in a signed contract, along with any targets you feel are appropriate. Ensure you are comfortable with all the details contained within the contract and that any technical terms are explained in full.

Choosing an ISP

If you want to communicate with the outside world, you'll need an Internet Service Provider (ISP). There are many ISPs who offer a range of internet services, so shop around to find a provider who offers the best solution for you. Ask your business colleagues for their recommendations, or ask your IT supplier.

Once you've decided to connect your business network to the internet, you need to be aware of all the security risks.
